         …and even more Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana

 

During research of the Maryland militia in the War of 1812 F. Edward Wright examined over a thousand applications for bounty land (authorized in 1850 and 1855) and pensions (authorized in 1781 and 1888). It became apparent that a large number of veterans had migrated to Ohio, Indiana and other points in the mid-west by the time they or their widows applied. Following are abstracts of some of the claims made by veterans in Ohio and Indiana. Many of the veterans can be found in Henry Peden’s books Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana and More Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana. The names of these veterans are noted but their abstracts are not included to avoid duplication of Peden’s work. The abstracts reveal genealogical information about the veterans and his family. Oft times mentioned are acquaintances who attested to the military service, marriage and death of the veteran. Relatives and neighbors often accompanied the applicant to the courthouse to substantiate the claim. These records frequently contain statements of siblings and in-laws.

 

Following the veteran's name in each abstract are a series of numbers which identify the bounty land claim and or the pension applications. In the case of the bounty land claim there are a series of numbers representing the year of the act by which the applicant makes the claim - followed by number of acres granted - followed by an arbitrary number for that veteran's file. "Rej" signifies that the claim was rejected. (Claims were frequently rejected for the lack of a sufficient number of days of service or as the result of incorrect information such as the name of the veteran's captain.) The pension files are identified by the veteran's S.O. and S.C. numbers and widow's W.O. and W.C. numbers. Following these file numbers is the rank held by the veteran and then the name of the captain as given by the applicant.

Allen, John M./S.O. 32380/rej/ - /Capt R. McKelvy, Capt R. Dyer/17 Mar 1855 appeared John Allen 62 residing in Prince George’s Co; wit: J. P. Dickinson, Thomas Adams, residing in Wash D. C./22 Apr 1878 appeared John Allen 83 residing in Summerfield, Noble Co, Ohio; says he was called out at Piscataway in 1813, marched to Nottingham from thence to the tanyard springs, took sick on the last tour..."we got home a few days before the Battle of Bladensburgh..." When he enl he was age 18, 5 ft 4 inches, had black hair, grey eyes, dark complexion, and was a farmer. He was born in Prince George’s Co. In this application he writes, "I am quite infirm and not able to go to a court of Record, being over 12 miles off." Witnesses: James Brown 71 & Shepherd B. Philpot 59, both residing in Summerfeld who had known John Allen since he came into the neighbourhood 38 years ago.

Arnold, Samuel. Pvt., 17th U.S. Inf.; b. Westminster, MD. Enlisted regular army 17 Oct 1813 at Cadiz, Ohio, by Lt. Milligan for duration of war. At enlistment he was 5 ft, 6 inches, blue eyes, red hair and red complexion, age 35, farmer. At Erie, PA 28 Feb 1814 or 1815; Lt. W. Featherstone's company near Chillicothe, Ohio, 31 May 1815. Hughes (Hughs), Richard. Corpl. under Capt. Flautt, 29 Apr - 29 Jun 1813. In 1853 the only minor child of Richard Hughes, Hiram Harry Hughes, age 17, was represented by Finly Reeves of Allen Co., Ohio, in application for a bounty land warrant. Finly Reeves had been appt'd guardian of Hiram and his sister Amanda Cecelia Hughes by Court of Common Pleas, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, Dec 1850. Hull, John C./55-160-9198/Private/Capt John Sample/Mar 19 1855 appeared John C. Hull age 65 res Union Co, Ohio; states he volunteered to leave the fortifications at Elk Landing to carry a supply of ammunition to French Towne but the place was burned before the party could reach the breast work; the party was nearly cut off by the British, escaping capture by their knowledge of the nearest route to the fortifications of Elk Landing. They reached Elk Landing in time to beat off the enemy and save about thirty sail of bay craft that laid up there for protection. The British were computed at two hundred strong, in ten barges, armed with swivels in their bows. John Hull was in a second skirmish with the British boats in the following year at the same place, also under the same Captain. In August 1814 John Hull was again called out by Capt Sample in common with the whole Brigade to repel an expected invasion near Baltimore. He remained at Baltimore until ordered to Cecil Co. by Col Veazey to send out the delinquent members of his regiment to join his command. John Hull was employed by the government for several years, sending thirty-two and forty-two pounders (long guns) from Principio Furnace by direction from Col John Rodgers for the frigate built at Philadelphia under his directions. He succeeded in getting them all to Philadelphia before the Principio works were destroyed by the British. Hull was later employed by Samuel T. Anderson, Naval Storekeeper of Philadelphia or New York to superintend the transportation of heavy cannon from Elk Landing to Christiana for the use of Sacketts Harbour. At that time John Hull was the acting partner of the firm of A. Scott and Co. He was from this time until peace was proclaimed, engaged in forwarding gunpowder from Reni Duponts powder works on the Brandywine to the city of New York. "If any further proof of my identity is necessary the record of the state of Maryland will shew that I was commissioned as a cornet in Capt Wm Hollingworth's troop of horse in Cecil County Md (then only 18 years of age) and afterwards first Lieut of artillery in Capt John Evans Company of light artillery, both these companys were attached to the first Brigade then under the command of Brigadier General Hezechiah Foard, an officer

Zanesville, Ohio, acquainted 25 years. He said he was drafted under the orders of Capt. Darby. He was in Fredericktown, MD, with his father's team of two horses and wagon when word came that " the enemy was in Washington and coming toward Frederick, res. with his father in Fred. Co., MD, c.12 miles from Fredericktown. Commanded by military authorities he proceeded to Fredericktown Barracks and took on a load of knapsacks, muskets and provisions and hauled them to Tennellytown under guard of four men, thence to Washington on the Georgetown Road; continued hauling under orders for 18 days, then he was placed under control orders of Campbell Nichols, and aided him in the delivery of 16 or 17 prisoners at Fredericktown Barracks.
